Securing your website or blog
Yesterday, I had a very interesting and unexpected evening.
As I was getting ready to go for dinner I was suddenly hit by a strong smell. I looked out of the window and black smoke was coming in. I quickly realized there was a fire in the hotel I am currently staying in. At that moment all my thoughts went to passports and my computer!
Calamities are not things we like to think about, however, how many times have you had your computer crashed and hoped you had clicked yes to ‘Do you want me to back up’ on your computer? Or thought maybe I should have bought that cloud space and I would still have all my precious pictures.
Well, that is one thing I am happy to say I have mastered long time ago. BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP!
As a photographer I can’t afford to loose any of my clients’ work, and that’s have spilled into my own life. If I need to leave a place in a rush I should be able to have all I need to keep on working the next day!
In the end the fire was not a major event, no one was injured, and no major damage to any buildings either. So this story has a happy ending. But reflecting back to yesterday, while I ran around in circles, I knew, if all I could save was my external drive but had to leave my computer behind I was safe. I have my entire ‘cyber’ life in my external drive. I have backups in other places, one is also not enough external drives also have a limited live so make sure you have backups of backups. I know it may sound excessive but believe me IT IS NOT!
Today, I just want to say to you. If you do nothing else today. DO THIS one thing for you, for your family, for your business. You will be glad you did. Computers crash, brake-ins happen, floods, fires, you name it. Are you backed-up?
So in this spirit, today I want to share a quick tutorial that is part of my DIY Conquer Your Website bonus section to show you how to back up your WordPress website.
Now on to securing your site. As we all know there’s no secret that there are people with too much time in their hands and hacking is a reality we ALL have to live with. This week I had to deal with a frantic call from a friend’s who’s site was hacked! There are many geeky things you should know about but for the purpose of a post I want you to do four super important things.
- IF you are still using a the default user name ADMIN please stop reading right now and go and change that to something else. Even if you are not using it but it is still an option on your site. Go and delete that account and when it asks you to whom the privileges should go to just add them to your user name. This is the first place hackers check because they know people who don’t know WP leave it and it’s basically an open invitation for them to hack you!
- Change your passwords! Again similarly to the point above make sure you are not using the default, and/or change them regularly to something else than your pet’s name 1234.
- If you haven’t done so, download a security plugin such as Sucuri, or iThemes Security to ensure that your site is protected.
- Last, be careful with plugin you download, for the most part plugins in WP are reliable but if they have not been updated for a long time and not tested on your current version of wordpress you are better off not downloading them. Do a little bit of research before downloading them because again, this can be a way for hackers to get to you.
One finally word of warning.
I have said it before but will say it again. Before you do ANYTHING to your site, back it up both your content and your database if you don’t know how to do it and haven’t seen my video on it click here to watch.(you will need to enroll for free to watch it)
We have a saying in Spanish ‘Mujer preparada vale por dos’ Roughly translates to A prepared woman is worth two women. And I believe that!
So go and back up your site. You will be HAPPY you did!
Do you have a favorite back-up system? Share it below. I always love to hear what other people do!
Gracias and have a great weekend!
